A New Year at White Pine Berry Farm

Update

What a wonderful year 2017 was. We have enjoyed having so many of you come out to pick fresh berries and get other produce, too. We were blessed with some good weather and had nice crops of all the berries. The strawberries and raspberries did very good, but this was the first year we had a significant crop of blueberries. They are slow growing, but are looking good. Currants are also growing in popularity and we will be planting more of them next year. We will have a new variety of strawberries for you to try called Malwina – it is a later variety. I really liked the flavor on the ones we tried this year.

Some of you know we have had deer eating our blueberry plants and our apple trees for these past years. The Department of Natural Resources has helped finance a deer fence around some of our property. Over 100 fruit trees have been killed by deer in these past 5 years, so we are excited about the fence keeping deer away from the plants.

The Hungry Turtle is a cooperative in Amery, WI of which we are members. Our coop has purchased a lot of produce from us this year, especially raspberries, sweet corn, butternut squash, Galeaux Pumpkins (they are delicious edible pumpkins even though they are kind of ugly), and ginger. If you ever get a craving for some great food with some new twists, check out the Farm Table restaurant in Amery. The owners have helped get the coop going and use lots of locally produced food.

Our children and their spouses have been a great help to us this year. Strawberry Shortcake Day and Fall Family Day, along with the corn maze would not be possible without them. We also want to thank all of our employees. So many wonderful young people helping out and from your comments, they were kind and caring.

I could go on and on, but now, we wish you a Happy New Year. Thanks for the good memories.

Greg and Irma

😇When you pull up to your church and see Holy Donuts you gotta buy some🍩. He is in Faith Community Church parking lot until around 9 tonight (Wednesday), or follow his page for where he will be next. I first tried his donuts when he was serving for event at our White Pine Wedding Barn.

🍋‍🟩The key lime was soo good. A little lift after a hard holy week for our church.

Even cooler—he started this business to help pay for college at UW–River Falls🦅, and now he’s employing other college students to help them do the same. Pretty awesome.

🧑‍🌾 Farmer Greg shares one thing he’s especially passionate about: selling directly to YOU 💛🍓

For Farmer Greg, farming isn’t just about growing berries—it’s about connecting with the people who enjoy them, sharing his knowledge, and building a community around fresh, local food 🌱🌼

Grace asked some great questions 👇
❓ How did you become a farmer?
❓ What drew you to this berry-filled adventure? 🍓
❓ What’s your favorite (and least favorite 😅) part of farming?

A: I come from a long line of farmers—that’s how I got started. My family has been farming since they immigrated to America in the 1880s. 🌾🇺🇸

A:⭐ Favorite: Being outside, watching things grow, and selling directly to customers.
🌧️ Least Favorite: Not being able to control everything. The weather impacts our outcomes so much—droughts, early freezes, late freezes. You learn pretty quickly that you’re not in control of everything, and that’s still a challenge, even as a seasoned farmer. 🚜🌦️

My favorite Easter story 🌷🐣
Grandma Mary, Farmer G

My favorite Easter story 🌷🐣
Grandma Mary, Farmer Greg’s mom, was an incredible farm wife! She used to hide baskets all over her yard, barns, and buildings. 🚜🌾 She’d hand us a sheet of clues and send us out like little scavenger hunters.

I was maybe 14—the youngest—and they had just gotten a new propane tank. My clue included a line that said, “I hope you stayed warm this winter.” 🔥 I found it in about two seconds… and started eating the candy right in front of her. 🍬😎

The next year, my clue just said, “Happy Easter.” That should’ve been my first warning 😂, but I knew I had it coming and couldn’t complain. I searched for over an hour with no luck. I finally asked for another hint, and she said, “Go get a shovel.” 🪏
I said, “But the garden is all tilled…”
She replied, “Only to hide your basket better.” 🌱😳

Looking back… I guess I was destined to be a market gardener—digging in the dirt for the good stuff all along. 🧑‍🌾🥕

❄️ It’s snowing, sleeting… just plain yuck out there—but we still made it to the dentist and Wilder Waffle Co 🧇🍓
A 2-hour delay = the perfect excuse for a daddy-daughter breakfast.

If you haven’t stopped by Wilder at Exit 4, make the trip—you won’t regret it!

Excited to have Derek, the owner of Wilder, back for our craft fairs this year. Big announcement coming soon 📣🫐!

Thanks to Sara for helping us out!

Farmer Greg is back with another berry important tip! 🍓🌱 Q: When is it safe to uncover my strawberries?

We know the warmer days have you itching to get out in the garden—but don’t rush it just yet! Keep those strawberry plants tucked in as long as possible. A surprise late frost can sneak in and do serious damage.

Patience now = sweeter, healthier berries later! 🍓✨

Keep the questions coming—Farmer Greg will keep the answers growing! 🌱

🚜 Tractor Safety Day!🚜 Today at White Pine Berry Farm, we hosted a special tractor safety training day for three of our younger team members! 🌱 We focused on gear shifting, hooking up attachments, and staying aware of all surroundings—especially keeping our customers and their children safe on the farm.

👨‍🌾👩‍🌾 As a working farm, safety is always top priority, and we’re proud of these guys as they get ready to take on important jobs out in the fields. 🌾

Reason #1 to never leave the farm 🚜😅
You might get stranded in Texas thanks to a snowstorm back home in Minnesota… and suddenly you can’t get into MSP ❄️✈️🙃

Last weekend we headed down to Texas to visit Luca’s birth mom ❤️. Plan was simple: fly back Sunday morning. Easy, right?

Well… Saturday night hits and boom—flight canceled 😬. Next available option? A couple days out.

So what do you do? You pivot.

Rent a car 🚗
Drive all day Sunday to Iowa ☀️➡️🌙
Wait for I-35 to open back up Monday 🛣️
Then finish the trek home 💪

Not exactly the relaxing travel plan we had in mind… but we made it 😅

Between the snow and adventures like this, there’s been a LOT of planning happening these past couple weeks—for this season and the years ahead 🌱🍓🫐🎃🌻🌽❄️

😿 Sad news from White Pine Berry Farm: our beloved
😿 Sad news from White Pine Berry Farm: our beloved farm cat, Izzy, passed away peacefully last night. For over 10 years, he was part of our family—our wedding host, a greeter to all guests on the farm, and a farm mascot since 2019. I’ll never forget Luca, my 3-year-old, petting him the other day and saying, ‘Izzy, I love you.’ I had a special snuggle with him just recently, something I hadn’t done in a while—I didn’t know that would be my chance to say goodbye. We’ll miss his funny photobombs📸 of Casie Carow Christmas minis, his warm greetings to guests, comforting snuggles, and even his adventures—like when he got stuck in the corn bin for two hot summer days or hopped in a car and almost got taken home accidentally. He had a special bond with Farmer Greg, but we all loved him. Rest easy, Izzy—we’ll never forget you. 💔🐾

🪴🎉Congrats to Garden Divas on their beautiful new downtown location! Their soft opening was last week during the fudge crawl, and we were honored to be a part of it.

Swing by Thursday–Sunday to check out the new space and grab some of our fudge and jams while you’re there. It’s very nice of them and Mei Mei's Cookies & Creamery to carry our fudge this month. 🍫✨

So excited to see another great local business growing in our community—cheers to what’s ahead! 🌿
